The Lagos State Government has announced temporary road closures across parts of Lagos Island in preparation for the annual Lagos Fanti Carnival, scheduled for Monday.

In a statement released on Friday, the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture said the restrictions will take effect from 7:00 a.m. to ensure a smooth, secure, and well-coordinated carnival procession.

Affected routes include King George V Road near Mobil Filling Station; Onikan Roundabout inbound to TBS; Flagstaff House inbound to TBS; Outer Marina by State House inbound to TBS; Campbell Street near the Old Defence Building; and Catholic Mission Street by St. Nicholas Hospital.

The ministry explained that the temporary closures are part of broader efforts to provide a safe and organised environment for the large number of participants, residents, and tourists expected to gather along the Lagos Island corridor for the historic celebration.

Motorists and residents have been advised to plan their movements in advance and make use of alternative routes during the period. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has already outlined diversion plans to ease vehicular movement and minimise congestion in affected areas.

According to the traffic plan, vehicles approaching from Obalende toward Onikan Roundabout will be redirected to Zone 2, while traffic from Bonny Camp heading toward McEwen Bridge, as well as from Flagstaff House to TBS, will be diverted through Obalende Bridge. Motorists from Outer Marina heading to TBS will also be rerouted via Obalende Bridge.

The government noted that the measures are designed to reduce disruption to daily activities, particularly for commuters and businesses operating within the Lagos Island axis.

While apologising for any inconvenience caused, the ministry appealed for public cooperation, stressing that the restrictions are necessary for a successful and hitch-free event.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the carnival, a major cultural highlight in Lagos, celebrates Afro-Brazilian heritage through vibrant music, dance, and colourful street performances, drawing both local and international audiences each year.
